A 28-year-old driver was killed New Year's Day in a single-car accident in downtown Atlanta.

Preliminary investigation showed that the driver, Terrell George, was traveling north on Marietta Boulevard just south of West Marietta Street at 8:07 a.m. when his car veered off the road, down an embankment and struck a tree.

George, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, according to Officer Kim Jones, a spokeswoman for the department.
