A man died after a house fire Wednesday morning in southwest Atlanta, officials said.

The fire was reported just after 8 a.m. in a home in the 1600 block of Brewer Boulevard, about a block from Sylvan Road.

Atlanta fire Battalion Chief David Rhodes said that within a few minutes of their arrival, firefighters found the victim, a man in his 50s who was suffering from smoke inhalation.

Firefighter Paul Rojas said he found the man unconscious on the floor, about 20 feet from the front door of the house. “It looks like he was trying to make his way out and just didn’t quite make it,” Rojas told the AJC.

Rojas pulled the man out of the house, and other firefighters began CPR. The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Rhodes said.

The man, who has not been identified, later died, medical officials said.

The fire was contained to an “add-on” bedroom at the back of the house.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, Rhodes said.
