A South Carolina man has been convicted of molesting his girlfriend’s daughter while they lived together, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office said.

Jason Martin, 48, of Piedmont, South Carolina, was convicted of child molestation and aggravated child molestation on May 14 after a five-day trial.

Martin was living with a woman in Gwinnett County in 2014. The woman’s daughter told a school counselor in March 2014 that Martin had touched her inappropriately. The girl met with a detective, but charges were not filed against Martin.

The following August, the girl told her grandmother that Martin had molested her. The grandmother told the girl’s father, and the family once again went to police. The girl told a detective that Martin would come into her room at night, get in her bed, molest her and sodomize her.

A detective referred the case to the district attorney’s office for prosecution. Jail records show Martin was arrested nearly a year later, in July 2015.

In Martin’s May trial, a jury deliberated for four hours before returning guilty verdicts on both charges. Judge Debra K. Turner sentenced Martin to life in prison.
