A Fulton County grand jury has indicted a man on charges that he deposited stolen income tax checks worth more than $14,000.

Jean Samuel Gai, 37, of Atlanta was charged with two felony counts and nine misdemeanor counts of theft by taking, along with 10 felony counts of forgery, according to Lauren Kane, spokeswoman for the Georgia Attorney General's Office.

Gai is accused of depositing 11 checks from the Georgia Department of Revenue that were stolen from the U.S. Postal Service, Kane said. All of the checks had been forged with the signature of the taxpayer who was owed the check. The alleged crimes took place in July 2010, Kane said.

Each felony theft by taking charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine; the misdemeanor theft charges each carry a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison and a $1,000 fine. Each forgery charge carries a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
