An Atlanta man already in jail was charged Thursday with killing a father at a MARTA bus stop as his 3-year-old daughter watched, police said.
Deon Clinton Davis, 23, of Atlanta, is accused of killing Dantavious Chatman in April at a bus stop on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, where Chatman was waiting with his young daughter.
Three weeks after celebrating her third birthday, Dakayla Chatman watched as her father was shot, just down the street from her grandmother's house, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. "Dee" Chatman, 31, died after being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.
“It’s like he kept the baby from getting shot,” Dakayla’s grandmother, Veronica Tuggle, said the day after the shooting.
Tuggle ran to the bus stop and found the child trembling and scared.
“She said, ‘My daddy just got shot,’” Tuggle said. “Imagine: A 3-year-old. A 3-year-old?”
Chatman was a person of interest, but never charged in connection to a fatal shooting in College Park in October.
Davis has been in the Fulton County jail since May 18, when he was arrested on unrelated charges, including cruelty to children and failure to appear in court, booking records showed. He was being held without bond late Thursday.
