A DeKalb County grand jury Tuesday indicted the man accused of shooting an Atlanta police officer last month, charging the suspect with multiple offenses including attempted murder.

Cameron Christopher Maddox, 19, also was charged with two counts of aggravated battery of an officer, four counts of aggravated assault, seven counts of gun possession during the commission of a felony and theft by taking.

"This was a senseless shooting upon an officer of the law and innocent bystanders," DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said in a statement. "This was simply a violent and deplorable act."

Police say Maddox shot Officer Dexter Toomer from the rooftop of a Little Five Points restaurant  the night of March 22, as Toomer stopped near the end of his shift to buy a drink.

Toomer was injured in his leg and was released the next day from the hospital with a positive chance for full recovery, police said.

A daylong search throughout Atlanta's police Zone 6 -- which extends into DeKalb County -- resulted in Maddox's arrest the following evening.

Maddox was indicted in DeKalb County because the side of Moreland Avenue from which he allegedly fired the weapon is in DeKalb. He remains in the DeKalb County Jail without bond.
