A Marietta man carrying a pistol as he walked toward a hospital emergency room was stopped by police late Tuesday night. But then the man apparently fled.

William David Howard was holding an 1800s-era pistol as he walked outside of Wellstar Cobb Hospital, according to an arrest warrant. As he approached the emergency room, Howard was confronted by an officer, who asked him to put down the weapon.

Howard, 41, then allegedly ran with the gun as those in a parking lot watched, according to police. He was seen hiding in bushes near the scene, according to the warrant.

Howard, previously convicted on felony drug charges, was released from state prison in September, according to the state department of corrections Web site. He served just over four months.
