Noel Maloof spent only one year as Decatur High principal before getting promoted last week to City School Decatur’s Chief Operating Officer. Maloof admitted Tuesday he had no intention of leaving the job after so brief a tenure.

“My heart is always in the building,” said Maloof, who’s spent the last seven years as a principal at three different schools. “But I’ve been in administration for 12 years and this the first time I’ve had a chance for a job like this. I couldn’t refuse taking the next step.”

Maloof added that “absolutely, I want to be a superintendent someday.” But he also agrees the COO position includes risks, especially since current Superintendent Phyllis Edwards—who hired him—will only work through Dec. 31 at the latest.

“It could be, the new [superintendent] comes in and they want a whole different team,” he said. “I can’t control that. But it would be a mistake to not take this job and opportunity.”
