No major problems were reported Monday morning when five miles of flex lanes opened on Ga. 400. But that may have been because some drivers didn't know the extra lanes were open.

Signs along Ga. 400 southbound announcing the flex lanes remained covered, so drivers likely didn’t realize the lanes were open.

The new flex lanes, which officials hope will alleviate some of the traffic woes for commuters, opened at 6 a.m.

The northbound flex lanes start at Abernathy Road to the MARTA North Springs station to Northridge Road and Old Milton Parkway to Windward Parkway.

“And on Georgia 400 southbound we’ll add one more mile of flex shoulder lanes and that will start at the MARTA North Springs station and end at Abernathy Road,” GDOT spokeswoman Annalysce Baker told Channel 2 Action News.

The flex lanes have a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Motorists can use the lanes from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Before you hit Atlanta roads, check for updates and alternate routes online through the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
