UPDATE: After this story published, Macy's announced it was closing all of its stores at the end of the day Tuesday, March 17 due to the coronavirus.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The Macy’s at The Gallery at South DeKalb now has a closing date: Sunday, March 22.
The company announced early this year that its South DeKalb mall location would close this spring, but it had not announced a specific date that it was slated to close.
The final clearance sale at the location will continue until the store closes on Sunday, Macy’s spokeswoman Lauren Vocelle said. All sales are final and some items are discounted up to 70 percent off the original ticketed price. (Cosmetic goods, fragrances and some brands are excluded from the additional discount.)
ABC News reported Sunday that Macy's plans to keep its stores open with normal business hours for the time being amid the spread of the coronavirus, but is conducting more cleaning in the stores.
Macy's, formerly Rich's, has been an anchor tenant at the shopping center — which used to be named South DeKalb Mall — since it opened in 1968. The decision to shut it down came after "careful consideration," the company said, and accompanied a wave of Macy's store closures across the country.
The company's stores at Northlake Mall, Lenox Square mall, Gwinnett Place Mall and The Mall at Stonecrest will continue to stay open. The Macy's at North DeKalb Mall closed in 2016.
