A University of Georgia veteran police officer was killed Tuesday night in a two-car crash in Jackson County, according to a media report.

Jeff Whitfield, 56, was en route to his Jefferson home when his car struck another vehicle, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the paper reported.

Whitfield was a former FBI agent and served with the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot in the Gulf War.
