Decatur’s city commission approved a contractor this week for demolishing the former home of the Tabernacle Missionary Holiness Church on 5th Avenue in Oakhurst. Several city officials admit little knowledge of the building’s history or even how long it’s been abandoned.

But real estate broker Van Johnson, who was born in 1948 and grew up on 5th, said that before his birth and during his childhood the building was a small grocery and the area was then known as “Poplarville” for nearby Poplar Springs.

“It was getting run down when I graduated from Decatur High in 1966,” said Johnson.

Assistant City Manager David Junger said it will be torn down in the next two weeks.
