A Lithonia man was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday after murdering a man who was trying to protect his mother outside a Decatur area theater last year.

Demarcus McClarin, 29, was convicted of felony and malice murder last month in the April 2008 shooting death of Mac Mayer, 36. Mayer threw himself on his mother, Ad Mayer-Lillard, to protect her as McClarin tried to rob her at gunpoint.

McClarin was sentenced by DeKalb Superior Court Judge Gail C. Flake. He was ordered to serve two life sentences, plus five years, in prison.
