The Lilburn Police Department is adding a four-legged member to its ranks.

The department received more than $2,700 in donations to train a new police dog for the K-9 unit as well as the dog’s handler, Officer AJ Ajanovic. Lilburn Citizens Police Academy Partnership donated $1,100, the VCA Animal Hospital donated $1,329.20 and Lilburn Square Shopping Center donated $300.

Once the canine cadet is chosen, it will train with Ajanovic to locate narcotics and perform searches. The dog is expected to have its badge by July, and a K-9 unit vehicle is being manufactured.
