The dead end section of Lilburn’s old Main Street NW will be abandoned and permanently closed, following a unanimous city council vote on Monday. The old portion of road between Church Street and U.S. 29 will become part of a 7.6-acre mixed-use development. The property is owned by the city and is under contract for purchase. Last year, City Council rezoned the tract for commercial and residential use.

The existing section between Church Street and the second roundabout in front of First Baptist Church will still be called “Main Street NW” along with the rest of the road south to the railroad tracks.

The new section of Main Street from U.S. 29/Lawrenceville Highway to the second roundabout will now be called “Main Street” to distinguish between the two roads. Google Maps has updated the road map to reflect the changes, but several other road mapping services still show the old roadbed.

Lilburn staff is working with these companies to update the maps.
