The Lilburn City Council unanimously passed a new email policy for city employees Monday night.

The policy requires city workers to use their official email addresses only for work. They cannot use those email accounts for personal business.

Employees also must not use personal accounts for city business; if anything related to their role with the city is sent to their personal email address, they must forward it to their work account in order to have it for future records. The policy also directs employees to save emails and comply with state public records laws.

The policy was not tied to any improper email use, city spokeswoman Rozalyn Schmitt said. The city simply did not have a specific email policy.

“The city understands the importance of maintaining records and wants to make sure all employees understand and are aware of the guidelines,” Schmitt said in an email.
