Acworth residents, your police department has an opportunity for you.

It involves a chance to ride around in a police car, talk to Acworth officers when something isn’t going horribly wrong and find out where your tax money goes.

The police department is now accepting applications for its 17th citizens' police academy.

The free academy begins Feb. 28 and will continue 12 weeks (except during Spring Break) from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

As for what you’ll do for a dozen weeks: “Participants will have the opportunity to interact with officers and receive a basic understanding of the operations of the Acworth Police Department and law enforcement in general,” the agency said.

Graduation is May 16. Those who pass will have the chance to ride with officers during their shift.

Download the application online and either mail or fax to 4440 Acworth Industrial Drive or 678-801-4059.  To participate, you'll have to undergo a background screening.
