An indicted DeKalb County school official’s lawyer will be in court next week to explain why he was knocking on grand jurors’ doors.
A judge changed the hearing date for Manny Arora to June 24. The judge moved the hearing date up because of a scheduling conflict, the district attorney’s office said.
This week, DeKalb Superior Court Judge Cynthia J. Becker issued a temporary protective order barring Arora from having any contact with members of the grand jury.
Arora represents Patricia Reid, former DeKalb schools chief operating officer also known as Pat Pope.
A grand jury indicted Reid, along with former schools Superintendent Crawford Lewis, Reid’s former husband Tony Pope and her secretary Cointa Moody, last month on charges of racketeering and bribery. Reid, who remains free on bond, currently works at the district, but her employment ends June 30.
Arora said the law allows defense attorneys to interview grand jurors. The district attorney’s office has said this is against the law and would violate grand jurors’ oath of secrecy.
