A crash Wednesday morning on I-85 southbound at Highway 129 (exit 137) in Jackson County killed two people and seriously injured two others, authorities said.

The driver and front-seat passenger in a 2004 Ford Excursion died after the vehicle veered off the freeway, the Gainesville Times reported. The driver overcorrected, and the vehicle flipped and hit a tree, the Georgia State Patrol told the Times.

The two other people in the car were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, the Times reported.

Only the driver was wearing a seat belt, according to the report. All of the passengers were ejected from the vehicle.

Identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of family members.

Both freeway lanes were closed for awhile after the crash, which happened shortly before 10 a.m., authorities said. The traffic backup reportedly stretched for miles at one point, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation website.
