Two people were killed in a collision Sunday in Cobb County.

Cobb County police are investigating a fatal crash involving one driver accused of racing another vehicle moments before the collision.

Officers were dispatched to the collision around 4:44 p.m. April 7 on Floyd Road at Bates Road in Austell. Preliminary reports indicate a black 2010 Toyota Yaris was traveling westbound on Bates Drive towards Floyd Road.

Cobb police said the Toyota turned left on Floyd Road and into the path of a red 2006 Infiniti G35, which was going northbound on Floyd Road.

James Wheeler, 31, of Acworth, the driver of the Toyota, was transported to WellStar Cobb Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Wheeler’s passenger, 35-year-old Douglas Duff Jr. of Mableton, also died in the crash.

The driver of the Infiniti, 19-year-old George Cambi of Austell, and his juvenile passenger were both transported to WellStar Cobb Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Cobb police said multiple witnesses told cops that the Infiniti was racing another vehicle on Floyd Road before the collision happened. The accident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call Cobb County police at 770-499-3987.
