Four people were killed and two people were seriously injured Friday night in a two-vehicle collision in Jefferson County, according to a report in the Augusta Chronicle.

About 9 p.m., a Nissan Altima with a Clarke County tag traveling north on Highway 296 ran a stop sign at Highway 88 and collided with a tractor-trailer, the paper reported.

Four people in the car, three of them women, died at the scene, the paper reported.

Witnesses said the driver of the tractor-trailer tried to avoid the car and ran off the road, according to the report.

Jefferson County is about 140 miles east of downtown Atlanta.
