Kennesaw State will now play football on ‘carpet-based hybrid grass’

Football has been played on grass, AstroTurf and asphalt but not really on “carpet-based hybrid grass technology.”

But that will change in part thanks to Kennesaw State University.

When the Owls take the field at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in fall, they will play on the only reinforced natural turf of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, according to a KSU press release. It was installed last week.

The stuff is grown by Precision Turf in Braselton. It is a mix of real grass and some sort of fibers, all of which are supposed to give stability and a lack of irregularities.

It can't be that bad because Atlanta United played on it Wednesday night during the U.S. Open Cup and no one broke their ankles.

In other news...

Kennesaw State University’s game design program is the only one certified in Georgia. Its enrollment has skyrocketed from about two dozen students in 2009 to more than 400 this year.
