The Kennesaw City Council voted Monday to postpone until January a decision on a referendum about term limits for elected officials.

Approved June 1 by the city council, the nonbinding referendum was scheduled to be on the Nov. 3 ballot on whether the mayor and city council members should be limited to two terms of four years each.

However, council members decided to wait since City Attorney Randall Bentley advised them to request a city charter amendment of the Georgia General Assembly so that the city would be allowed to include such nonbinding referendums on the city ballot.

Bentley said two other options are that the city could ask the state legislature to approve a city charter amendment that sets term limits or approve city charter amendments that both allow nonbinding referendums and set term limits.
