Kennesaw Mayor Derek Easterling has been appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Kennesaw Mayor Derek Easterling has been appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp to serve on the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

The commission oversees the certification and professional conduct of certified employees in Georgia school systems.

Easterling is a leadership teacher at Awtrey Middle School in the Cobb County School District. Easterling, who is entering his third year as an educator, said he is “so grateful for the opportunity” to serve on the commission.

"I know what it took for me to become a teacher, and (getting) all the checks on the boxes and requirements were important to me," he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Easterling earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management and a master’s degree in secondary education from Grand Canyon University. He has been Kennesaw’s mayor since January 2016.
