The remains discovered in the backyard of a Kennesaw residence where a U.S. Army veteran was last seen more than three years ago are human, a Cobb County police spokesman said Wednesday.

“We can confirm at this time that those remains are of a human,” Sgt. Dana Pierce told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Cobb police discovered the remains Tuesday after getting a tip from someone. Bones and other remains were found in the ground under a concrete slab behind a home in the 500 block of Farmbrook Trail, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Charles Massner went to the residence in March 2014 to spend the night with a friend, police said. He has not been seen since.

A neighbor, Jackie Moen, told the news station she believed Massner was OK.

“I truly thought he had walked away, and he was somewhere safe," Moen said.

Moen said the homeowner was a “very nice gentleman” who reported Massner missing.

“He just told me that he had no idea where he went,” Moen told Channel 2. “That he went to the store and when he came home, Chase was gone. And he had no clue.”

Pierce said the Cobb County Medical Examiner is working to identify the person whose remains were found.

Massner, a married father of two daughters, served in Iraq.
