For the first time in its 10-year history as an incorporated municipality, Johns Creek is rolling back its millage rate.

After voting down a motion Monday to keep the 2016 millage rate unchanged at 4.614 mills – which has been the rate since the city’s inception – the City Council voted 4-3 to trim the rate to 4.360.

Had the rate stayed the same, Johns Creek would have realized a gain of about 2 percent, or $374,581, in net taxes levied over last year because of growth in its tax digest, according to a Notice of Current 2016 Tax Digest issued by the city before the Council meeting.

Johns Creek was asked to act on the millage rate this week by Fulton County and the Fulton County schools, which a city staffer said want to get the information to the state by Sept. 1 so tax bills can go out soon.

Fulton’s tax bills are running about a month behind schedule this year because of problems in the way the county calculates property tax exemptions. Taxes ordinarily due Oct. 15 are not expected to be collected until November, at the earliest.
