The city of Johns Creek Friday activated its first high-intensity activated crosswalk midblock pedestrian signal on Barnwell Road near Barnwell Elementary School.
The HAWK signal is a pushbutton arrangement that requires drivers to slow down, then stop as pedestrians cross a street. The signal also directs pedestrians when to walk and when to stay put. The HAWK device is dark until a pedestrian pushes a button, triggering a series of signals.
The devices are growing in popularity in Georgia, and have been put in place near the Suwanee town green and along Buford Highway in Dekalb County.
The city said the signal is being placed on Barnwell to give students a place to cross as they head to school.
