A move by some members of the Henry County Board of Commissioners to enact a moratorium on new industrial and warehouse projects failed after a lengthy and spirited discussion at the board’s June 4 regular meeting.

Dee Clemmons, Bruce Holmes and Vivian Thomas voted in favor of the measure, while Gary Barham, Johnny Wilson and board chair June Wood voted against it. A subsequent motion by Wood to deny the moratorium died for lack of a second.

Clemmons and Holmes urged Wood to recuse herself because of her position on the state economic development board, which they said was a conflict of interest. Wood rejected that idea and said she would vote as she normally does.

Proponents of the moratorium, which would have lasted a year at most, said it was necessary to give county officials the opportunity to put an infrastructure plan in place.
