Four families are displaced Thursday after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Lithonia, Red Cross officials said.

About 4:30 p.m. 11 residents, including a set of twins, were evacuated from the Parc Lorraine Condominiums, Red Cross Atlanta spokesperson Divina Mims said.

Channel 2 Action News reported that the fire started at the front end of an apartment building and quickly spread to the back.

Resident Arthidrea Williams told the news station she found out about the fire when someone was knocking on her door. She, too, started helping a few of her neighbors escape.

“You just try to save everybody,” she said, “just hope everybody made it out.”

Neighbor Kenneth Harrison said the first people he thought of were his 1-year-old twins.

“All I knew is that I should get my kids out of there,” he told Channel 2.

Residents said earlier a repairman was at the apartment complex fixing the lighting.

DeKalb County fire spokesman Capt. Eric Jackson didn’t say what specifically led to the fire, but told Channel 2 crews will be investigating if that was a factor.

In the meantime, the Red Cross is working to assist the families displaced by the fire.

“Caseworkers will continue to work with families whose homes burned in the fire to provide additional recovery resources and help them get back on their feet,” she said.
