Some traffic relief is coming to Canton-area residents.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is beginning work on an interim project to construct an additional eastbound lane on Ga. 20 from I-575 to Brooke Park Drive, about a half-mile stretch. It also includes resurfacing and restriping that portion of the road.

The project was awarded to Bartow Paving Co. of Cartersville and Baldwin Paving Co. of Marietta at a cost of slightly over $270,000 and came out of public comments made during State Sen. Brandon Beach’s transportation town hall meeting in July.

GDOT officials said the project’s aimed at providing quick relief from congestion caused by fast commercial development. It’s expected to be finished by the end of the month. GDOT officials said the work will be mostly done during non-peak hours to minimize congestion.
