ORIGINAL STORY (published Oct. 10): People who want to donate money to Hurricane Michael relief efforts can do so easily through GoFundMe.

The fundraising site has created a general relief fund with a goal of $50,000. It will be managed by The Direct Impact Fund, an independent nonprofit organization that distributes funds to verified campaigns and aid organizations.

The website will also be updated regularly with individual verified campaigns, and will include information for people in the storm's path.

Hurricane Michael was upgraded to a Category 4 storm Wednesday morning and made landfall in the afternoon. The center of the storm's eye hit land near Mexico Beach on the Florida Panhandle, just east of Panama City Beach.
