HUD gives Atlanta $250K to improve AUC neighborhoods

April 1, 2011

Atlanta is one of 17 American cities to be awarded the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s new Choice Neighborhoods Initiative grant.

The city was awarded $250,000  to transform the neighborhood around the Atlanta University Center into a sustainable mixed-income and mixed-use neighborhood.

The Atlanta University Center neighborhood is home to the country’s largest concentration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs).  But the neighborhood is characterized by poverty, lack of jobs, troubled public schools, and poor quality housing.
