Hospital treated for bed bugs as precaution
A unit of Georgia Regional Hospital/Atlanta has been treated for bed bugs as a precautionary measure, a spokeswoman said Friday.
A patient on one of the forensic units reported bug bites to the staff Wednesday, said Kristie N. Swink, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, which operates the facility in DeKalb County. According to its website, the hospital has about 300 inpatient beds and offers adult mental health, inpatient habilitation and forensic program services.
“The physician treated the patient and decided that the patient could possibly have been bitten by bed bugs,” Swink told the AJC.
The hospital notified a pest control company, which treated the whole unit as a precaution.
The patients were informed about the situation and removed from the unit, which usually has 40 people, Swink said. They returned after the treatment was complete.
“The hospital handled the situation according to the infection control policy,” she said.
