Did you hear the one about the horse that walked into the swimming pool?

Turns out, it wasn't a joke.

A horse that stepped onto the cover of a swimming pool behind a home on Northland Drive found itself in cold water Sunday afternoon, Chief Jeff Scarbrough with the Sandy Springs fire department told the AJC.

"He walked out onto the cover and it gave way," Scarbrough said. "He couldn’t get out."

Firefighters had to get into the pool to reach the horse, Scarbrough said. After cutting the pool's cover, firefighters walked the horse to the shallow end, where their work was done.

"He jumped out on his own," Scarbrough said.

The animal was not injured in the rescue, which lasted about 20 minutes.

The homeowner, who boards the horse, told the AJC there is a fence around the pool. But he's not sure why the gate was left open, allowing the horse to reach the pool.
