The Johnson Ferry Road bridge over the Chattahoochee River is being renamed for Georgia’s senior senator.

The dedication of the U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson Bridge is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Johnson Ferry North entrance to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, according to an announcement Monday by Sandy Springs.

The Sandy Springs City Council is to vote Tuesday evening on a resolution renaming the bridge. The resolution notes that Isakson commuted to work across the bridge to his real estate office in Sandy Springs and was the driving force behind improvements for the Johnson Ferry/Abernathy road corridor.

First elected to public office nearly 40 years ago, a 17-year member of the Georgia Legislature, and a congressman from 1999 to 2003 and a U.S. senator since 2004, Isakson “has always been a strong advocate for the community,” the resolution says.
