The Phi Beta Kappa Society has selected Atlanta for its Arts & Sciences Cities of Distinction Award, which honors municipalities for the quality, depth, range and vibrancy in its community engagement with the arts and sciences.

Previous winners of the award, launched last year, are Chicago and Portland, Oregon.

The academic honor society’s award also recognizes the mayor’s office of cultural affairs for its commitment to the arts through programs including the ELEVATE arts festival and the public art program. The award ceremony takes place in April. The office of cultural affairs will accept the award on behalf of the city.
