Homeless woman couldn't afford the tags for her BMW

A woman living in a Marietta homeless shelter was arrested for stealing a car tag and placing it on her 1998 BMW 328I, according to court documents.

Cobb County police arrested Giovanni Compton July 22 at a YMCA in Marietta. The arrest warrant stated  Compton was confronted when a police officer ran the tag number on her BMW and it was registered to a Honda Accord.

"Giovanni Nikki Compton advised that she borrowed the tag because she can't afford one right now," said a Cobb police officer in the arrest warrant.

The warrant states the license plate was allegedly stolen from a car parked at MUST Ministries in Marietta, where Compton said she lives.

MUST Ministries is a nonprofit organization that provides food, shelter, education and a variety of other services for "families and individuals in crisis," stated the website.

Compton was released on a $1,000 bond.

Compton has been staying at the MUST Ministries shelter for seven weeks, said Kaye Cagle, director of marketing for MUST Ministries.

Cagle said Compton has children but would not say if the family is still at the shelter. Cagle did say families can only stay in the temporary shelter for eight weeks.
