The city of Holly Springs has donated $7,435 – the net proceeds of the city’s Memorial Day 5K and Fun Run – to the L.R. Tippens Education Center, a Cherokee County School District facility for special needs students.

“We have been trying to raise money for a walking path to be used by our students as a coping strategy, but we keep coming up short,” said Tippens Principal Kelly Strickland. “This generous donation will help us to reach that goal.”

The donation also will fund additions to the facility’s sensory room and Training Academy, where mock businesses let students practice career skills and prepare for success after graduation, Strickland said.

More than 120 runners participated in this year’s Memorial Day 5K. Sponsors included Gold Sponsor Opex Fitness, R&D Mechanical, Ideal Landscape Solutions, Sutherlin Nissan, The Coffee Vineyard, Allstate-The Bray Agency, Holly Springs Chiropractic & Massage, Riverstone Graphics and Big Peach Running Co.

Tippens Center is at 2450 Holly Springs Parkway. Information: http://cherokeek12.net/lrtippensec/
