Holly Springs Mayor Timothy Downing has announced he will not seek re-election and will leave office at the end of his third term in December.

“It’s time for someone else to do the job,” Downing said in a telephone interview. “This lets me spend more time with my family and focus on my career as a Cherokee County deputy sheriff.”

Downing has served 14 years in Holly Springs government, having started as a City Council member in 2002, according to the city's website. After serving an appointed six-month term, he was elected to his first four-year term as mayor in 2004.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Downing has served on the board of the Cherokee County Development Authority and as a member of the citizens roundtable for the Cherokee County Comprehensive Plan Update and the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association. He, his wife Sandra and their two children have lived in Holly Springs since 1999.
