Hiram will begin its annual mosquito treatment program on Tuesday to attempt to reduce mosquito populations in and around the downtown area.

The fogging activity will continue from 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, weather permitting, during the mosquito breeding season along the rights-of-way of city streets.

This fogging chemical that will be used is not a pesticide but a growth inhibitor and is not harmful to humans, pets or wildlife. The treatment prevents mosquito larvae from maturing to adult mosquitoes.

While this effort will not eliminate mosquitoes entirely, it will reduce their population and aid in preventing the transmission of mosquito-born illnesses, according to the city.

High levels of this chemical can have a negative impact on some aquatic life such as fish.
