Memorial Day in Smyrna will be filled with music, marching and Marines.

The city is hosting an event Monday at the downtown memorial, located at 2800 King St., to remember and honor those who died during military service.

Music by the Georgia Army National Guard’s 116th Army Band starts at 9:30 a.m. and the raising of the flag to full staff will happen at noon.

According to the military, the 116th is the oldest National Guard or Army Reserve band currently in service.

The 94th Airlift Wing Honor Guard, based at Marietta’s Dobbins Air Reserve Base, will present the colors.

Highlighted speakers include retired Gunnery Sgt. Victoria Turney and retired Lt. Gen. Steve Arnold.

The city said Turney served 20 years in the Marines, from Saudia Arabia during Desert Storm to riots in Los Angeles.

Arnold was in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967, according to Smyrna, and was given command of the Third Army and the United States Army Central Command until he retired in 1997.
