Brian Strickland of McDonough is moving from the State House to the State Senate after winning the Jan. 9 special election for the District 17 Senate seat, while Geoffrey Cauble took the most votes to capture Strickland’s former District 111 House seat.
The House district lies entirely in Henry County, while the Senate district includes portions of Henry, Rockdale and Newton counties. The special election became necessary when former state Sen. Rick Jeffares resigned in early December to focus on his campaign for lieutenant governor, and Strickland then resigned for run for Jeffares’ post.
Both winning candidates prevailed without needing a runoff, as Strickland got 62 percent of the vote in his race and Cauble garnered 51 percent.
