A Henry County sophomore died Friday afternoon following a brief hospitalization, the school system said.

Jason Holland attended Ola High School in McDonough, J.D. Hardin, district spokesman, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Holland played football at the school.

Family members told Channel 2 Action News that doctors were able to rule out a heart attack or a stroke through tests. The family also said Holland's death had nothing to do with him being a football player for the school.

"Whatever led to his hospitalization did not occur at school, during football practice, or immediately thereafter," Hardin said.

Counselors were being made available for any students or staff members needing help with grief, Hardin said. A note posted on the school's Facebook page announced the death to the school community.

"We will remember Jason as a friend, dedicated student, and a well-loved member of our Ola High School family," the statement read on Facebook.

Funeral arrangements were not yet available late Friday.

A Friday night scrimmage between Ola and Henry County High School was postponed for a week after news of Holland's death.
