The Henry County Police Department has a number of firearms that must be sold or destroyed under strict guidelines in accordance with state law, and the Board of Commissioners approved that action at its Oct. 4 meeting.

Georgia law requires that they be sold but only to persons who are licensed as firearms collectors, dealers, importers or manufacturers under applicable federal and state law and who are authorized to receive them under the terms of such license. All but one of these weapons will be sold by the purchasing department.

The lone exception is a firearm that was “identified as broken, illegal to possess, not of any historical significance and not needed for law enforcement purposes and should be disposed of in accordance with Georgia law.” It was also declared surplus so that police department can properly destroy it.
