Henry County residents may get a chance later this year to address the south metro Atlanta community’s transportation woes.

The Henry County Commission recently approved a resolution that may ask residents in a referendum in November if they want to levy a 1 percent SPLOST for transportation over the next five years.

The money, which could raise as much as $204 million, would be used for buying right-of-way for the county as well as for new bridges, roads, and bike paths, county leaders said.

Henry, which has seen explosive population growth over the last 20 years, has struggled with clogged streets and backups on highways, especially those around Interstate 75. The county also has considered creating special taxing districts around the warehouses off Ga. 155 that have become an important part of its economy but also added to its congestion.

The commission’s decision to consider a TSPLOST will need the support of Stockbridge, Locust Grove, Hampton and McDonough to levy a full 1 percent tax, the county said. If not, the maximum collection would be 0.75% of a penny.

Commission Chairwoman June Wood plans to work with city leaders on creating a list of projects and deciding whether to bring a referendum to voters during the presidential election Nov. 3.
