The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted at its Nov. 19 regular meeting to approve a contract for a tower relocation that is expected to improve emergency communications system coverage in western Henry County.

The 20-year-old tower will be moved from its current location on Oak Street in Hampton to 233 Richard Petty Blvd. and placed on land at a higher elevation to increase the tower height by 250 feet, according to officials. The cost of the upgrade is $588,111 which will be paid out of the emergency department’s budget and with E911 fees.

Both the old and new sites are properties owned by the city of Hampton, which is not charging the county to house the tower.
