He played high school football in Henry County, signed a college scholarship for wrestling and excels in the classroom. But 18-year-old Devon Berry can’t walk on his own.
Cerebral palsy may have weakened the strength in his lower body, but it couldn’t stop his determination.
Devon will hit prime time tonight when he's featured in ESPN's E:60 newsmagazine show at 7:30. A short preview of the program shows Devon crawling on his knees from the sidelines to the line of scrimmage.
“I had a lot of people doubting me,” Devon said. “I had to fight my way out here.”
In September, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution featured Devon, then playing defensive tackle for Hampton High School. Then in November, Devon accepted a scholarship to wrestle for St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.
Hampton football Coach Chad Ashley said Devon earned the right to wear a jersey by practicing as hard as any other player, even hitting the weight room at 6:45 a.m.
Devon says his faith drives him to reach his goals, and his positive attitude and athletic abilities inspire others, including his future college wrestling coach.
St. Cloud’s Steven Costanza, whose team is the defending Div. II, said he was impressed with Devon before he even met him.
“I don’t think there’s anything this kid can’t do,” Costanza said in November. “He’s one of the most incredible people I’ve ever met.”
Devon has said he plans to study broadcasting in college.
