Hampton will cite saggy pants

Droopy britches could cost cold cash in Hampton.

WSB-TV reports that a new city ordinance went into effect on Friday that allows police in the Henry County town to write citations to people wearing pants so low that they show skin or underwear three inches below the waistline.

Hampton City Manager Andy Pippin said this is not a revenue-raising ordinance. It is more of a pants-raising measure. He told Channel 2's Jeff Dore that city police will inform violators about the law first; the city does not plan any campaign to get the word out, so officers understand that they'll be breaking the news to ordinance breakers.

The first time police encounter someone with excessive sagging, they are to give the drawers-displaying offender instructions about the new ordinance and advise them to keep their pants up.

Future offenses, though, could draw fines from $50 to $200.
