The Hampton Ethics Committee ruled March 19 that City Council member Elton Brown violated the city code in his behavior at a council meeting last October.

The charges were related to Brown’s comments at that meeting, which several citizens alleged were offensive and condescending to city residents, city employees and other elective officials. One complainant charged that Brown suggested citizens were racist and questioned the patriotism of the entire city. Brown defended his comments when addressing the ethics committee, saying that the city and its citizens do not care about veterans, and he did not consider those who didn’t vote for him to be his constituents.

The committee voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council reprimand Brown.
