UPDATE: 19-year-old Shawn Anthony Lopes has died after being shot in the chest early Wednesday morning, Duluth police said.
Joseph Seung Min Park, 20, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and “two other weapons charges” in connection with Lopes’ death, said Officer Ted Sadowski.
Park, Lopes and others were “hanging out” when Park took a “clip or a magazine” out of a gun and, believing it was empty, pointed it at Lopes, Sadowski said. There was one bullet in the chamber and Park pulled the trigger, accidentally shooting Lopes, Sadowski said.
Police believe the incident was accidental.
“If it wasn’t an accident, he’d be charged with murder,” Sadowski said.
Park turned himself in at the Duluth Police Station on Wednesday.
